When was the last time you went camping? Thanks in part to the need for socially distant activities, the traditional outdoor adventure is enjoying a rise in popularity.
According to the recent KOA North American Camping Report, camping replaced some other family vacations that had to be canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions.
Even before the pandemic, camping was making a comeback. According to a 2018 article published by forbes.com, some families are camping as frequently as three times per year. The article notes a 64 percent increase in the popularity of camping in the U.S. since 2014.
Millennials and Gen Xers make up three-fourths of all campers, according to the article. Camping is a perfect family activity, and families with children comprise 52 poercent of all campers. Noting that there is nearly an even split between white and non-white campers, the Forbes article notes that the activity represents mor racial diversity than the overall U.S. population.
Here are some of the advantages of camping.
Social benefits. Camping is a way to unplug and reconnect with friends and family—something sorely lacking from today’s “always on” world.
Closer to home and less expensive. Camping is a way for people to take more vacation time because they don’t have to go far. Plus, their vacations are a lot less expensive than the traditional trips.
This industry is enjoying steady growth in the United States (1.9% from 2012 – 2017). This means that smart retailers can benefit from this rapidly growing hobby.
However, with this change in the camping demographic to a younger audience comes a change in the way that people camp. Younger campers are looking for more demanding physical activity and more connected and social opportunities than generations prior to them.
While this group enjoys the outdoors, they believe that technology can help them enjoy their vacation.
This isn’t your grandfather’s camping. Younger generations expect amenities and products that match their modern lifestyle.
According to hipcamp.com amenities such as fire rings, grills, pets allowed and showers are among the most desirable campsite features. That means shower accessories, dog supplies, and cooking items—to name a few—are items that every camper will want and need. Items such as backpacks with phone chargers, fire starting kits, waterproof gear and easy clean up items (to keep those tents clean) are hot items for retailers.
Microfiber is the perfect solution for camping. The material is durable, withstands more washes and, because it is constructed with manmade material, it is less likely to hold bacteria. This makes it perfect for camping and campers.
